This is a website started at the turn of the Twenty First Century to introduce to you three consecutive Long Haired German Shepherd dogs, of our acquaintance… And to let you experience what we did about these awesome companions. The exploits and behaviors documented here have helped people learn about a type of dog not often heard about in the United States – the German Shepherd "longhairs" – and through this website we have gained many friends around the world in the passing years, and even influenced the making of a major motion picture. You’ll also learn games these dogs love to play, just how emotionally close you can be to an animal like this, and even what we’ve learned about caring for an elderly or incapacitated one…
This website is a memorial to the first two of these – Ms. Drew and Ms. Sable – and introduces you to the latest addition to The Norberg Family, Bentley, immediately below.
He was cruelly dumped by somebody in the Mojave Desert in Southern California, spent two years in rescue, and we adopted him on Sunday, August 17, 2025, in what was believed by the rescue to be his seventh year of life. His name is Bentley, and here is his picture…

We adopted Bentley, as we did his immediate predecessor, Ms. Sable, from what we consider the premier German Shepherd rescue organization in the United States, Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles. (You can find out more about them, and meet their many currently available dogs, HERE.)
On the evening before his arrival in our home town of Portland, Oregon, USA, the staff of Westside sent us a "farewell" photo of him, in which their whole staff participated. This was a highly unusual sendoff from this organization; we discovered he had become a very special favorite there, and he very quickly bonded with us within less than a week of his arrival. Here is the photo they sent us; Bentley is in the front center....

As with our two previous dogs, this page marks the start of Bentley's adventure with us, and ours with him.
